Healthcare Services by Swami Debananda Mission

Swami Debananda Ashram and Mission regard healthcare as an integral part of their commitment to serving humanity. Guided by the ideals of Sadguru Swami Debananda Maharaj, who emphasizes the expression of spirituality through compassion and selfless service, the Mission extends healthcare support to the socio-economically underprivileged sections of society through various healthcare facilities and initiatives established at different locations.

Through these establishments and medical outreach programs, the Mission strives to make essential healthcare services accessible and affordable to those in need, bringing relief to the suffering and upholding the ideal of serving humanity as a manifestation of the Divine.

Eye Day Care Centre

The Swami Debananda Eye Day Care Centre, an initiative of Swami Debananda Mission at Krishnapur, Purba Bardhaman, West Bengal, provides eye-care services, particularly to people from economically disadvantaged and underserved communities. Guided by the vision of Sadguru Swami Debananda Maharaj, the Centre works to ensure that financial difficulties do not prevent people from receiving necessary eye treatment, including cataract surgery.

The Centre provides cataract surgery using techniques such as Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) and Phacoemulsification (Phaco), depending on the patient's condition and the advice of the treating specialist. Located within the peaceful surroundings of the Ashram, the Centre serves people with care and respect, regardless of their caste, religion, or financial background.

Mission & Objectives

The main aim of the Swami Debananda Eye Day Care Centre is to help people receive eye care and cataract treatment, especially those who face financial difficulties.

The Mission works towards the following objectives:

  • To provide free cataract surgery to eligible patients who cannot afford treatment.
  • To make eye-care services available at affordable costs.
  • To reach people in villages and underserved communities through eye-screening programs.
  • To help patients access appropriate treatment and surgical care.
  • To provide spectacles and vision-correction services to people who need them.
  • To support patients through treatment coordination and follow-up arrangements.
  • To serve everyone with dignity and respect, without discrimination.

For the Mission, helping people receive medical treatment is an important part of its service to society. Through the Eye Day Care Centre, the Mission seeks to put the vision of Gurudev Swami Debananda Maharaj into practice by reaching out to people who need care and support

Journey and Impact

The Mission began providing eye-screening services in 2016. Since then, it has worked to help people identify eye problems and receive the treatment they need. In the earlier years, cataract operations were arranged in collaboration with partner hospitals.

In November 2025, the Centre began conducting cataract operations through its own surgical unit, marking an important step in the development of the Mission's eye-care services.

Our work and achievements include:

  • Eye Care Services Since 2016: Providing eye-screening services to people in need.
  • Around 5,000 Patients Screened: Helping people identify eye problems and seek appropriate treatment.
  • Around 1,000 Free Cataract Operations: Facilitating free cataract operations through collaboration with partner hospitals.
  • Own Operation Unit Since November 2025: Beginning cataract operations at the Centre itself.
  • 658 Cataract Surgeries at the Centre: Recorded cataract surgeries since the start of operations at the Centre.
  • 205 Free Cataract Surgeries at the Centre: Providing free surgery to eligible patients who cannot afford treatment.

Services

The Centre provides the following services to meet the eye-care needs of the community.

  • Eye Screening and Examination

Eye-screening services help identify common eye problems, and patients who may need further examination or treatment. Screening programs also help people understand the importance of regular eye check-ups.

  • Cataract Surgery

The Centre provides cataract surgery for patients who require treatment, following assessment by qualified eye-care professionals. Depending on the patient's condition and the specialist's advice, surgeries are performed using Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) or Phacoemulsification (Phaco).

  • Free Cataract Surgery

Eligible patients who cannot afford cataract surgery are provided with free treatment, subject to the Centre's arrangements and available resources. The Mission gives particular attention to people who may otherwise find it difficult to access surgical care.

  • Affordable Eye Care

The Centre aims to keep treatment affordable for patients who can contribute towards the cost of their care. Its purpose is to help people receive necessary treatment without facing unnecessary financial hardship.

  • Spectacles and Vision Correction

The Centre also provides spectacles and vision-correction services for people who need them. These services help patients with refractive errors and other vision difficulties in their daily lives.

  • Outpatient Department (OPD)

The Centre provides outpatient services on the following days:

    • Sunday – 3:00 PM
    • Wednesday – 3:00 PM

Patients can visit the Centre during these hours for eye-care consultation and guidance about available services.

Vision for the Future

The Mission intends to strengthen the Centre's existing services and gradually expand its work so that more people can receive eye care close to their communities.

Our future priorities include:

  • Expanding Eye Screening: Reaching more villages and underserved areas through eye-screening programs.
  • Strengthening OPD Services: Improving existing outpatient services and exploring additional consultation days according to patient needs and specialist availability.
  • Expanding Spectacles Services: Reaching more people who need spectacles and affordable vision correction.
  • Increasing Free Cataract Surgery: Helping more eligible patients who cannot afford cataract treatment.
  • Introducing Other Eye Surgeries: Exploring additional procedures, such as pterygium surgery and other suitable ophthalmic operations, depending on medical requirements and available facilities.
  • Improving Diagnostic Services: Strengthening eye examinations and diagnostic facilities to support timely treatment.
  • Improving Postoperative Follow-up: Providing better follow-up support and guidance to patients after surgery.
  • Raising Eye Health Awareness: Educating people about cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, refractive errors, and the importance of regular eye examinations.

These are the Mission's proposed areas for future development. They will be taken forward gradually, depending on patient needs, available resources, medical expertise, infrastructure, and applicable approvals.

Blood Donation Camps

Introduction

Swami Debananda Mission regularly organises blood donation camps to support hospitals and provide assistance to patients in need. Every year, on 25 December, a blood donation camp is held at Krishnapur Ashram, where more than a hundred donors come forward to donate blood. Inspired by the ideals of Sadguru Swami Debananda Maharaj, they consider it a privilege to serve humanity through this noble act of selfless giving.

Similar blood donation camps are organised by the Mission’s branch ashrams and Dibyasanga Kendras at various locations, extending this life-saving service to more communities. The Mission also provides blood donor cards to financially disadvantaged patients suffering from thalassaemia and other haematological disorders who approach it for assistance.

Due care is taken to ensure the well-being of blood donors, who are provided with nutritious refreshments and necessary medical support. Through these initiatives, the Mission seeks to save lives, alleviate human suffering, and foster a spirit of compassion, selfless service, and community solidarity.

Care for Donors

Donors are provided with nutritious food, medical check‑ups, and necessary medicines, ensuring their well‑being while they contribute to saving lives. The Ashram emphasizes that giving blood is not only a medical act but also a sacred offering of love and humanity.
